I fucking HATE summer. Our poor little trees are cooking. The leaves are shriveling up and falling off even though I've been giving them water every night. Oh, and have I mentioned that our house is being invaded by ants looking for food and water? They're coming from every door and window they can squeeze through. I keep seeing ones crawl out of my keyboard. :(

you need to spray! we have this spray my mom bought when we moved into our apartment, she sprayed the entire outside of our apartment and in the laundry room, around the windows, etc. anywhere it would easy for an ant to get in. the best part is that once the spray dries, it's fine for the cats to be in those areas. you could buy some and spray around the entire outside of your house.

it works wonders! this particular spray also kills ants if they come in contact with it, so you could spray indoors to try to help kill the ones you have.

I've been using BugOut spray on them, and it has worked fine. They just keep popping up in places where I haven't sprayed yet, so I've been carrying the can around with me everywhere.

is it one where you can just go outside and spray around the entire house?

the orkin(sp?) man told us they come inside to get away from the heat.

Just leave the ants be and they'll clean all of the crumbs out of your keyboard and anywhere else it's not easy to vacuum or sweep. Besides, they make entertaining toys (and sometimes snacks) for the kitties :)

Also, fuck 104° F! We're supposed to see ~95 each of the next 2 days, plus all the humidity the corn likes to pump into the air in August, so heat indices are gonna be in the 100-105 range. Probably more like 110-115, because I don't think there's any way the dewpoint will stop in the low 70's like NWS seems to think it will...

That's the one tolerable thing about Oklahoma. It hasn't rained for so long that the dew point was only in the 50s to lower 60s today. I think the highest heat index reported in Norman today was around 107.

I think the temperature hit 100 (or damn close to it) on only one day in the entire time I lived in Iowa, but it happened while I was living somewhere with no A/C. The combination of the heat and humidity literally made me feel sick after awhile, so I ended up spending the rest of the day at the library just to cool off. It sucked hardcore.

Ames is surrounded by corn, yes? Being in Iowa, I think it'd have to be...

We ended up with a dew point of 79°F this afternoon. Fortunately we fell 4°F short of our predicted high of 94, so our heat index was a chilly 106°F :)

I have a feeling the dew point will hit 80 tomorrow they've revised our high from 95 down to 90... We'll see if that holds true, since the Lincoln office can't even forecast what happened 2 hours ago.

I did the last 2 summers with nothing more than a window A/C in my bedroom and ceiling fans. I'm so freakin' glad to have central air this summer.

August is the worst month, ever! I'll take hypothermia and frostbite over heat stroke any day.

Yes, Ames is completely surrounded by corn...so much so that the meteorology program at ISU has graduate degrees in agricultural meteorology.

Speaking of horrific dew points in Illinois, I just saw the weathernerds post about the ILX sounding with 8000 CAPE. That's certainly the highest I've ever seen.

Yeah, sounding of doom! That's the sort of CAPE we tried to get while playing with NSHARP in Analysis and Forecasting, until we decided to see just how high we could get the CAPE to go :)

If you can chalk around the bowl, do it. For some reason, ants will not walk across a chalk line unless they absolutely have to (like if you draw a 1" diameter circle around one. Not that I would ever do such a thing... muahahahaha!).
