An exercise in futility is being in a class called "Geology for Engineers" and debating on flood management with the stance that the flood control structures in place (dams, levees, etc.) are not the most logical solution to the problem. I don't want to offend any engineers reading this, but you just have no common sense whatsoever. Let's just spend billions upon billions of dollars to build the biggest dam we can so that those people can live right on the river. And when it breaks, we'll spend billions more to build an even BIGGER dam!

*sigh*

Beating my head against a wall sounds better than debating against all of them when I'm outnumbered 20 to 1.

Actually, I think engineers would pass on towns in favor of Arcologies (if you ever played SimCity 3000, you're familiar with the term)

Dude, as a civil engineer I am going to make it my duty that an Arcology gets built somewhere on this planet. I have seen real designs for them and they are incredible.

Arcos are from SC200 BTW = )

But see, people pay us alot of money for them to live in a flood plain. I think its stupid for them to live there, but if they want to pay me for it, I'll do it. Of course the dam shouldn't be breaking either... but that is an engineering law/ethics problem. For some great uses of dikes, dams, and levees, look at what the Dutch have done to claim a whole bunch of land from the ocean. Of course there were some disasters along the way, but the technology they invented to solve thier problems is incredible.

If the sea level ever rises, though, they're screwed.

Oh, so there aare(were) other majors in that class besides engineering and environmental science. I thought it was almost all engineers and then me and maybe a couple others in my major.
