Cat pointed me at this: it's a known bug in IE5 for Mac. Luckily, it is only for IE5 for Mac - IE6 works fine, and so does IE5 for Windows. Frankly, for the number of people using IE5 for Mac (which is very buggy), you are best off letting it look less than perfect for that subset, rather than trying to get something that works in everything else as well as IE5 for Mac...
Not the ideal solution, I know, but the best one I've found...
