Chillin' with Cauchy, hangin' with Helmholtz

I studied dynamics for eight straight hours today with no breaks. That may not seem like much to some people, but for me that's pretty amazing. I even ate lunch at my desk, which isn't all that unusual except that I was studying WHILE I WAS EATING. Aaaand I get to do it all over again tomorrow up to test time at 4pm. After the test I can thankfully take a break from dynamics for awhile and get back to my research. Plus, the OU-Texas holiday is Friday (seriously, they cancel class to commemorate a football game here), so after the test I'm done with dynamics for the rest of the week.

My mom mailed both my sister and I jars of homemade pickles and relish. If you don't think that's weird, I should remind you that my sister is currently in JAPAN. Mom seriously just paid $50 to mail pickles to Japan.

That is a LOT of studying. I hope the test goes well...and I think it will! Go get 'em!

Football

I went to OSU as an undergrad... at the time, I thought OU-OSU games were crazy. Classes ended early, people went absolutely nuts. I loathed football and all college sports, until I went to Wisconsin. At Wisconsin, football is The Religion. It's the spice melange of the people who live there. They cannot survive without it (that and beer).
The fervor of ordinary Wisconsin games is an order of magnitude larger than the most contentious OU/OSU/Texas game I ever witnessed. My loathing turned to a perverse admiration of the collective spectacle. How could so many insane people have one thing in common? I realized that graduate students are similar. Sure, we don't paint our faces, or yell DE-FENSE to our buddies during their defense, but we're all fervent in our own ways. Even if we rarely talk to other humans.

Believe it or not, you were in undergrad at OSU at the same time as my mom. When I was in my early teens she took it upon herself to go back to school and get the college experience she missed out on after high school. I spent a lot of time on that campus as a result, which certainly instilled in me a love for the academic environment. Now that I'm here in that environment for myself I don't ever want to leave, which likely explains why I'm still in school. I could stop here with the Master's degree and get out into the real world, but I'm probably going to get the PhD and end up in research.
